Default Locking C Clip - steering column

1976 Vette, Steering column

Where can I get the locking c clip that holds the shaft lock plate on the steering wheel.
When reinstalling the clip, it broke. I guess we did not have it in right. We tried to install it without using the steering wheel lock plate tool.
I have looked in various catalogs to no avail.
Is is possible that a local parts place might have it? Is the correct term for the part correct?
I would sure like to get one quickly.

Thanks,

Mike

AS I RECALL, the clip on my TT column has been broken for about 12 years now, I forget just how/why it snapped, but most likely same way as yours....once it's installed I think it can't go anywhere....

You will need a new Shaft Lock Retainer 7819976. It is still available from GM dealers for about $12 retail. Dr. Rebuild has it listed as Upper Steering Shaft Lock Plate Mounting Clip "U" Shaped 6521124. His websight has a price of $7.60 but it states that many prices are not up to date.

BTW, this is a very critical part. Without the clip, your steering wheel and the whole upper steering shaft can telescope out right into your lap! Not a very good situation if you are driving down the road.

Also, don't forget to reinstall the plastic snap ring retainer 7808385. It not only secures the Mounting Clip but it prevents the big telescoping spring from grounding on metal parts of the steering column and blowing your horn continuously. I have found that the plastic becomes very brittle with age and it usually crumbles when you try and remove it. This part is also available from GM dealers and from most Vette suppliers.
