Re: 350 engine build, what do you think? (xfactor974)
It sounds like a good rebuild kit. Instead of MSD I use a Unilite vac adv dist. I also don't think that Multispark is anything to rave about, but I have the Crane 6HR for two stage rev limiting. My ultimite goal is to go distributerless ign. where I could vary timing and ignition curves very fast.
You always need more power so I would go with a minimum of 80 amps and if your going to the trouble of aluminum pulleys get a reduced size for the crank.
i would reduce the size of my crank but i want all my stuff to work, like the lights and when i get a stereo. where can i get a 80 amp alternator? i can get a 100amp for the same price as the 63 but is it too much? the MSD isnt multispark, its just a HEI package and it has a good price tag.
are you going to put a magneto on your car?
thanks for the response, this is the kind of constructive questioning i need, not a group bashing of my trans like on the other forums i've been too.

Alternator output is a function of rpm. So a 80 or 100 amp from your local parts store will produce more amps underdriven with smaller crank pulley than a 63 amp driven at normal speed. So with a hotter cam like your 274 your going to be doing more rpm your going to have the potential of max amp output.
Most alternators are max rated at 5600 rpm. Once motors get to a certian power level/rpm spitting the belts off becomes a problem. When your motor changes 3000+ rpm nearly instantly durring a gear shift with a shift kitted automatic . Things like alternators which might run normally 3 times the crank shaft rpm can't make the rapid transition. So you start blowing belts. I know from experience that alternators are not made to exceed 20,000 some rpm. So if it you have 3 X 7500 rpm they explode.
No mag for me. My ford pickup doesn't have a dist. So why should my Vette have one. I need to come up to the computer age.
I had a 355 with your cam choice. They are a pretty hot cam. You might consider CC roller tip rockers. I used them for years just because of their superior strength. Not just the roller tip.
cool, i want a hot and noisy cam :D thats just what i wanted to hear. about the alternator, i dont think i'll hit past 5000 rpms on the street, so i'll be ok, thanks for telling me about that though.
Re: 350 engine build, what do you think? (xfactor974)
If you don't want to pass 5,000 RPM, than you may want to consider something a little smaller for more torque. Especially with that Powerglide of yours. Something like an XE256. I had an XE256 and it pulled well past 5,000 and that was with smaller heads than those trick flows.
