what would be a good direct replacement carburetor for a 1977 SB vette? i am most interested in an edelbrock carb, but will consider a holley.
thanks, andrew
I will speak for myself, it's old and needs to be rebuilt. A 'professional' rebuilt costs $200 (in Canada) and I can purchase a brand new Holley for $425. Decision is simple.
Before I buy a Holley though, I will try to rebuild it myself without spending too much money.
All moving parts along with gaskets DO wear after 30+ years.
$425 for a Holley? I don't see how paying double for a generic carb is a bargain when you can get the Rochester that was made for the car rebuilt for $200 (under $50 if you do it yourself). God bless, Sensei

Holley Series 4165 Model 6210 is a direct replacement for a QJet including fuel line, linkage and air cleaner.
I think you should use a squirt bottle and a hose for a 'digitally oscillated atomization' device. Beats listening to folks b!tch about Q-jets.
Seriously, it's worth it to try to rebuild the Jet. It's pretty cheap and a fun project to learn. They really aren't as complicated as they look. But you can get a Holley or Edelbrock replacement for a new 'mostly' tuned carb out of the box and enjoy the car while fiddling with the 'jet. So my real answer is to do both.
If you go with the edelbrock performer with your stock manifold you will need a adapter plate. They are square bore vs spread bore of the quad.
Combined with the thickness of the adapter and not being able to use your stock aircleaner, there may be hood clearance issues.
I don't know if you have one where you are, but I went to a Carburetor Shop here in Midwest City, OK and bought a rebuilt rochester for my 1980, 350 and it cost only $150. My old carb was damage so I had to replace it.
Here is there information if you want to call them. They seem to have a lot of different models:

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you saying the carb came with NO choke assembly at all?
The Performer 2101 intake will take both the spring thermostat or electric choke.
After you end up getting a new air filter and probably a new fuel line to the carb you're going to be over $500 for a new carburetor. Rebuild the q-jet, it's a far superior carburetor anyways.
Not trying to steal this thread but if a person were to be looking for a quadrajet to rebuid are all quadrajets the same or are different models more suited to higher performance or reliability etc. ?

Look for a 4MV, the earlier model ones. They only flow up to 750cfm but have more performance parts readily available.
