Default TBI Install ...anyone done yet?

I got the bug to put this on my carburated 82 after reading the issue of corvette fever a few months back. They did this on a 76 model I believe.

Anyways I just bought a complete TBI set-up off a 1992 Camaro and will pick it up this weekend.

Just curious if anyone has done this yet? It looks simple enough and the article was very informative.

Are you sure it is TBI and not TPI. I thought the Camaro's had TPI.

Patsnitrovette here on the forum had a TPI in his car prior to the LS1 swap. Hopefully he will chime in, or you can PM him.

Nope it's TBI, all base model Camaro/ firebirds 88-92 had the Throttle Body Injection computer controlled system. 1987-1992 Full size trucks had this also as well as some caprices of those years.

TPI was found on the corvettes, Iroc camaros, and Firebird Formulas and TA.

Because of the availability and low cost, it's a cheaper and efficient alternative to TPI. There are tons of these in junkyards. The article said they did the whole computer controlled swap for less than $400.

One of the good things about this is that the throttle body resembles a carburator so you can still use the stock air cleaner of Pre-82 corvettes to make it look as original as possible if you want to.

I'm not doing mine until this winter, I'll post pics when I do.

Do you still have the crossfire wiring in place? If so, it's almost plug & play. You have the wires, the engine harness plugs right up, just tape off or remove the parrallel split off IAC controller. The 2 TBI connectors and other engine sensors plug right in. For the ECU get an edge card connector for the 1228746 ECM from speedtronics.net and it's plug and play also....however since you have a carb I fear someone removed most of that. You should still have the feed and return line and the TBI pump will bolt right into the level sender assembly. I would advise getting a TPI pump though, it has more flow capacity than the TBI one.

If you use the 1228746 ECM you will have to add 1 wire to the harness and the edge card connecor if you use it, it's for the IAT sensor.

I removed most of the crossfire wiring when i switched the car to carb, I'm getting the camaro harness though. Good thing is my return lines are still there

Here is an article on TBI if anyone is interested, http://www.advanceautoparts.com/engl...0001001fi.html

And the tech article was in the Febuary 2006 of corvette fever, very detailed with part numbers.

I am considering this, and am interested in following what you do.

Are the fuel lines, pump/sender, and fuel tank wiring harness from a CrossFire car what is needed to work with a TBI system? Would these items adapt in (with some work) to a 71 car?

As I said, I'll be watching this.

You don't need crossfire specific stuff, use your stock tank and sender. You'll need to run a 5/16" return line ( the stock 1/4" return is too small) I got lucky that my car was originally fuel injecton and the lines are already there.

You also can modify the pickup on the stock sender to accomodate the Fuel Pump (GM 25168719). So all the stock stuff will still work and fit like original.

All this is covered in the Feb issue of corvette fever with great detail. They even give your the computer wire colors and where they go. For once someone has made it easy for us.

Cool stuff. I've thought about this before for a power increase and low cost of upgrading.

The only questions are:

1) EEPROM- going custom burn or using a GM OEM profile?
2) What Cam? -Headers? -Heads?
3) 700R4 lock up -you still have a 700R4?

Lots to think about.

I'm using a stock chip, cam, center dump manifolds, and stock heads.

My main concern is reliablity and fuel economy. As far as transmissions, I'm keeping my 700R4 and adding a cable driven VSS to work with my computer and lockup. I could use the stock VSS that was attached to the back of my speedometer to save some money but haven't decided yet.

If you have a the original non-overdrive transmission without lock up you can get a custom chip burned with that portion of the code written out. While it would work, fuel economy would suffer some, but it would still work.
