hi guys, on my 75, all was well with the wipers until i was getting it ready for inspection(on the road soon ,after 4 years).I tried them the other day and only a click.i removed the switch and tried them with the wires alone.i got squirts(squirts earlier too) but no wipe, only a click coming from the under the hood.i removed the unit(after checking grounds)and hooked power directly to the leads to the wiper motor(not the plug but the motor itself),the motor works.when i re installed it the click returned.
i removed the plastic cover on the wiper terminals and see two screws holding down a plastic plate with springs and things underneath.my gut instincts tell me the click and the problem are under this plate.
I'm sure someone on this forum has had this happen, and now holds the key to me getting this old &%$#@#%$^ back on the road.
i'm heading to work now so i can't respond until this evening, but thanks in advance for any help at all you can provide.
p.s. If i remove the two screws holding the plate down under the plastic cover, will the spring in there go kablooey and vomit a variety of wiper parts around????
I had the same problem a few months ago. Mine turned out to be poor connections at the plug going into the ww motor unit.
The click is the control relay which means the switch on the dash is probably ok to the wiper motor control in the motor unit. You just aren't getting any current through the relay.
My ww motor unit is an aftermarket replacement to the original unit. The connector plug didn't quiet fit right. So, I just pushed the connector spades out through the plug a bit, made sure they were connecting solidly to the connectors in the motor unit, then pushed the connector cover back but only enough engage the 'seal' on the motor unit.
Been through several rains since (some really heavy - like today) with no problems since.
#1-did you have the starter off the engine-that is where the ground source is for the wipers and blower motor(does your blower work?)
#2-run a temporary ground to wiper motor case-just a piece of wire from good ground(alternator bracket, carb base bolt-"not air cleaner bolt")to case of wiper motor.
Mine did this on an 80 model, I could hit the motor with a hammer or my fist (ouch) and it would run until I hit a bump in the road, which in LA was 100 yds., then quit again. I also could remove the motor, hook up the wires and the thing would run. I would reinstall everything and push the switch and nothing. it and it would work. Drove me crasy and I never did figure it out. Good luck, I will be watching.
