My starter is starting to show signs of needing replacement and I think I will order and replace before it fails altogether.
It looks as though I can get a rebuilt AC Delco for under $100 from a couple of the Corvette supply houses.
Anyone have input on where and what model starter to get or installation experiences they can share with me. It should be a simple bolt-off/ bolt-on replacement.
I got a brand new mini starter from a fellow forum member. It is a new mini that is used for the 502 big block. Works great and it cost 100 dollars+ shipping. No heat soak and it sounds cool. I don't know how he got the price but it is new and works great.
STEVE. PUT A MINI-POWERMASTER ON THE NEW 383. LOTS OF POWER AND A COOL SOUND. WAS ABOUT $160 THROUGH A LOCAL SPEED SHOP. LOOK AROUND I'M SURE YOU CAN FIND A DEAL! JCL  :chevy
The mini-starter off a GM/Chevy 1996-2000 V-8 truck is supposed to bolt right up. If you can find one at a wrecking yard you'll be dollars ahead and have a much better starter than you'd get from a parts store.
I've been checking weekly for one at local yards with no luck so far.
Smokehouse69,
I ordered my starter from a salvage yard in Florida. If you decide to order one instead of purchasing one locally, make SURE that you are very clear with them about exactly what you want to prevent them from sending you a different type of starter that "will work" but won't be the mini-starter that you requested. That just happened to a friend of mine that ordered a starter from them. I guess that I was lucky that they sent the right starter to me when I ordered.

Like Gordon, I also got a new mini starter from the same forum member--one of the best deals I've found lately! :D According to him, it's the starter used on late model trucks w/ 454. It works like a champ!
Looks like everyone is recommending the new mini-starters. I will look into some of your suggestions.
I had looked at them on JEGS but wasn't sure if this was the way to go. I don't have to keep my '69 that stock, at least as far as a starter goes. The rest of the car is numbers matching and stock.
For high compression motors or headers, the new mini-starters are definately the way to go. I bought a CVR Protorque adjustable mini-starter from JEG'S for around $150 for my Z28 with a 10.5:1 383 CI with headers. The starter works on 168 OR 153 (I think those are the numbers) teeth flywheels. The starter weighs less, cranks faster and has more torque to get the flywheel spinning. All my heat soak/starter problems vanished, and I had a brand new rebuilt in the car before the mini-starter. Used to get stuck EVERYWHERE and could never turn the engine off for fear it wouldn't start. From the catalog pictures, it looks like the Summit Racing brand mini-starter is also made by CVR. They look EXACTLY the same. Easy install. The only thing is, the mounting pad for the ministarter does not completely cover the hole in the clutch cover plate. I've been told that this is not really a problem, but I'm thinking of fabricating something to close up the whole. I don't like the idea of dust and grit getting into the bellhousing. Blah-blah-blah. I'm rambling.
