Default 71 Big Block exhaust advice?

I need to make a decision on the exhaust system for this car so I can get it inspected and enjoy driving it before summer is gone. July is almost over and Carlisle is coming fast. It currently has the 454 engine and I'd like to get some added performance from the exhaust. It has the original exhaust manifolds with smog holes in them and someone added the fiberglass sidepipe covers but the sidepipes need replaced. Someone mentioned to me on a previous post that those manifolds are restrictive so I was leaning towards headers and new sidepipes as an economical way to get this car inspected and on the road without spending a ton of money. Any recomendations on headers (trouble finding big block sidepipe headers) and sidpipe combos that are reasonably priced? Should I have 2 1/2" or 2 1/4" pipes or is that too small? Or maybe it would be wiser to run headers with a full exhaust under and out the back but I just assumed it would be a lot more money. Funds a little tight right now.

Search the archives and you should come up with loads of information. If not, I'm sure someone can direct you to a source for big block sidepipes, headers, etc.
