I have about an inch and a half. everyone says it's normal although it gets kind of scary at high speed when you really have to start turning the wheel. Not sure if it really is normal, but mine's always been like that.
I don't know how much is acceptable, but mine is like Buffalo Dude's: 1-1.5" of play. See my thread (posted yesterday) "How to eliminate steering play?".
Pedro thanks for pointing me to your thread it really helped. I will check the steering out this weekend and see if I can't get it a little tighter. Of course with all of those caution flags flying I'm not sure that I want to mess with it too much!
Steering box bearing preload should be adjusted BEFORE adjusting gear lash. There is an excellent paper by Jim Shea on the Corvette FAQ website that explains everything. After following the instructions, I am happy to report going from about 1" to virtually zero!
