Default Steering Wheel Play

What is the normal amount of play suppose to be in the steering wheel? I have about 1/2" of play in mine and was just curious as to what the norm was.

I have about an inch and a half. everyone says it's normal although it gets kind of scary at high speed when you really have to start turning the wheel. Not sure if it really is normal, but mine's always been like that.

I don't know how much is acceptable, but mine is like Buffalo Dude's: 1-1.5" of play. See my thread (posted yesterday) "How to eliminate steering play?".

Thanks for the replies.

Pedro thanks for pointing me to your thread it really helped. I will check the steering out this weekend and see if I can't get it a little tighter. Of course with all of those caution flags flying I'm not sure that I want to mess with it too much!

I have 1/4" or less on both my cars. Any more is excessive. Adjust the lash on the steering box and you'll appreciate the difference.

Steering box bearing preload should be adjusted BEFORE adjusting gear lash. There is an excellent paper by Jim Shea on the Corvette FAQ website that explains everything. After following the instructions, I am happy to report going from about 1" to virtually zero!
