I went for a ride in a Nitrous assisted car last night and wow was it a blast.
What do you think about Nitrous?
What engines do Nitrous work best in?
I have a 383 stroker with 375 HP. Would Nitrous be a good idea?
Give me your 2 cents.
Re: What do you think about Nitrous Oxide? (John Dirks)
I ran nitrous on my previous toy, it is fun stuff. The important thing is respecting the stuff, if you get careless with it it will bite you and your engine normally takes the brunt of this. If your really interested in running nitrous, buy a few books on it and read them through, this is what I did and it really helped me set up everything correctly so I had a pretty idiot proof system that was both fairly consistent and very tuneable for street or track. I don't plan on running nitrous on my current toy, not becouse I fear damaging the engine so much as I have enough displacement now that I think I can make the power I want without it plus the bottle would take up all the room for my T-tops :D
Re: What do you think about Nitrous Oxide? (John Dirks)
If used properly I don't think it does any more harm then a blower or turbo. The great thing about nitrous is that's it's only used when you want it. Basically nitrous is like a chemical supercharger but instead of forcing a huge gob of regular ho-hum outside every day air into the cylinder like a blower it puts less but very oxygen dense and very cold air into the cylinder. If you read book on nitrous oxide and blowers you'll find that you set up the engines very similiar.
Re: What do you think about Nitrous Oxide? (73 LS-4)
The only thing I don't like about nitrous is after a few runs you need to refill the bottle. Blowers and turbos are there all the time. If it was me, I'd go blower but like 73 LS-4 said...............there is no replacement for displacement :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

I dont know much about nitros but your name freaked me out. John Dirks is also my name. The last name Dirks is not that common. To see another JD on the forum really freaked me. Peace dude ;)
Re: What do you think about Nitrous Oxide? (John Dirks)
Nitrous makes people and cars happy. Unfortunatly it's also prone to eating engines. If you get just a little lean, ( failing fuel pump, dirty fuel filter...) it's total rebuild time. It trickier than they want you to believe to set up properly...
Re: What do you think about Nitrous Oxide? (corvettemaster)
Main concerns with N2O are detonation, air/fuel ratio and fuel delivery. As long as timing/octane/engine temp levels prevent detonation, the A/F ratio is sufficiently rich to avoid a lean condition and fuel pressure is constant, N2O is fairly safe. N20 like the other "power adders" increases cylinder pressure and bearing loads, so a healthy rotating assembly (inc. forged components) is a good insurance plan for long engine life.

I have used and still use it on my mustang. I have installed numerous kits for the locals and I think it is safe. Don't go nuts, stick to 100HP and it will not harm the engine. As for filling the bottle every few runs you get alot of runs in a bottle. The only thing is that after using it you are addicted. Follow a few simple rules and it is safe. I even lean out the gas part of the system to running the jets square and the power increases. They supply conservative safe jets with a system. No special timming, plugs or pump is required with 100HP. Cast pistons will work fine.

It took my 383 SBC in a 3400 ride from a 10.90 car to a 9.40 car with the push of a button. Just respect the stuff. It can kill the motor very quick. We ran one or two runs per bottle. While how much NOS is in the bottle matters even bottle pressure is the key to proper flow. We always evenly heated (NO TORCHES) or cooled the bottle until we had 900 psi at the start line. If your serious get a bottle pressure gauge and a purge setup they really help in the tuning of the systems.
Re: What do you think about Nitrous Oxide? (1980LT1)
A wet system used both gas and nitrous. A dry system just used nitrous with no added gas. They rely on the extra fuel comming from the injectors. A carbed engine can only use a wet system.

i used to get approximately 10 to 12 runs on a bottle depending on how long you run it...it used to cost me about 35 to fill a bottle i had two bottles in the car so i would have one sent out while other could be used.
