I just got done changing all the headlight Actuator's and actuator relays and all i get is the left side moves about 1/4 of an inch. I found on one of the threads that if you take the bottom hose off the actuator and blank off the other side hook up a hand vacume pump. Well i pumped the right side up to 20 inches and nothing happens stop pumping and the vacume goes down slow. go to the other side and i cant get the vacume to even move on the gauge, if anybody can help !!!!! Hey CoachB
Probably not the answer you want, but I got sick to death of chasing vacuum leaks on that (IMHO) antiquated, RIDICULOUS pop up headlight system. I found this site ages ago http://www.mcspeed.homestead.com/Our_Products.html and have just finished installing it all.
Now, when I pull the headlights on - the headlights jump up. When I turn the headlights off - the headlights slam down.
No more grief with vacuum, period! Do yourself a favour and checkout that site. Chris has come up with a fine idea and is a mega helpful guy as well.
This is why my '79 is going to break my bank. This looks like a great idea. I will be off to the junk yard this week. Less vacuum to worry about.

I ended up with one new motor and one second hand motor. About the only thing I find to gripe about with this headlight mod is that one headlight lags slightly on the way up - and it's actually the new motor!! They both slam shut at the same time though.
I'm an electrical dunderhead but Chris's instructions were real easy to follow and the harnesses I made up look (if I do say so myself) very professional.
One other thing I did do was buy some brass gears for the motors from Brent Frankner. They are beautifully machined gears and won't strip any time soon like the nylon ones can. They look so good, I was tempted to buy a third one to put on my key ring!! You can get hold of Brent at bfranker@tampabay.rr.com
Hehehe, absolutely LOADS of room under the nose now without all that vacuum crap, AND the headlights go up and down when I want them to, not when and if they decide to!!
