Default Just Keep On Pumping

My 1979 is only on the road on the weekends.I just can not come up with an answer as to why I have to pump the gas so many times to start the car.The car has new plugs and all new tune up type parts. The carb is a brand new rebuilt. I do not recall if my car did the same thing when I purchased it.Timing is set correctly. Its almost like i am priming the system. The fuel pump is brand new.The fuel filter is clean.

350 stock
auto transmission
14,000 miles on the car

Thanks
Matt

Quadrajet?? common problem.... I have an 82 1/2 ton I ONLY use for plowing and while it runs great it needs (maybe) 20 pumps before it starts.....I "think" you need to epoxy the well plugs....do a search on Quadrajets and hopefully you will find what I (think) I am talking about.

Well, I looked in your profile to try and find out a little about you, like how old you are. I have to assume that you are under 35 years old.

Most younger folks have little or no experience with carbureted cars. All they know is from computer controlled - fuel injected engines. An older carbureted car has something called an automatic choke that enriches the air fuel mixture when the engine is cold.

It sounds like your automatic choke is not working or needs to be adjusted.

In an older carbureted car the starting procedure goes like this.
Get in car - pump gas pedal once (or twice) to "prime" the carburetor and allow the automatic choke to re-set. Turn the key and start the motor and let it warm up. After 10-15 seconds tap the gas pedal to allow the automatic choke to disengage. You are now ready to drive the car.

This is nothing like a fuel injected car where you simply turn the key and go.

I hope that helps!

In addition you are only driving the car on weekends so the carb has completely dried out. If I let my car sit for a week or more I pump it 10 times before starting. If I'm driving it daily, 2-4 pumps and she fires.
Welcome to the way it used to be.

Default hmm

I have an 81 vett with the computer controlled carb and am very pleased with it. I can let the car set for weeks get in it and one pump then turn the key and she fires right up EVERY TIME. When i tell people this they think im lieing, Im not sure if it is because its computer controlled or what but i like it.

Remember also that some or maybe all(not 100% sure) Q-Jets are vented and the fuel will evaporate after awhile.
