Default Question about #'s on Block

Can somebody tell me what some or all of these #'s mean? I'd like to know if this is the original block to my '72 Vette, or if the block is even out of a Vette. My Vette is a '72 Big Block 4 speed car.

On the back of the motor (I assume on the bell housing) on the Drivers side the # is 8999289

On the other side of the bell housing # J19 / 78

On the front of the block Pass side CE4(?)7580, I think the ? is an 8 but it's hard to read and I could be wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The CE stamp on the front pad is most likely indicative of a warranty replacement motor. The first digit after the CE is the year of the replacement motor, followed by a sequence number of the motor (no meaning in there). So, your CE4XXXXX motor indicates it was a 1974 replacement motor. J19 should be an October 19th casting date of the block, likely in '73, with the motor installed in your car in '74.

Then again, I may be way off......

So it's safe to say that it's not the original engine?

Yup, not original. Good news is that it's probably internally correct for your car, rather than being a big block out of a pickup or something.
