Console ID plate

454 Cubic Inches
455 Ft. Lbs. of Tourque
8.5 to 1 Compression
Everything I've seen shows 390 Ft. Lbs:confused:
Why havent I seen this anywhere else???
The 1972 Corvette LS-5 was rated at a torque peak of 455 lb/ft and that is the rating which appears on all original 1971 LS-5 console data plates.
I THINK that the discrepency relates to the fact that 1972 was a year of "transition" for horsepower and torque ratings. 1972 was the first year that virtually all of the auto manufacturers switched from SAE GROSS ratings to SAE NET ratings. Virtually all 1972 horsepower ratings were specified in SAE NET. However, I think that the torque ratings were kind of "inconsistent" for the 72 model year. I THINK that the 390 figure is the SAE NET torque rating whereas the 455 figure is the SAE GROSS rating. Since 1972 was a "transition year" both figures were published. Thus, the confusion. Nevertheless, and as far as I know, the 1972 console data plates all used the 455 torque rating and this is the SAE GROSS rating for the engine.
