We finally dropped the vortec in. Can I drive the car to a muffler shop without final adjustments to the valves? I'm running open headers and could hardly hear anything to distinguish w/c valves need adjustment. If so, how far can I drive it and should I go real slow???
I never have adjusted H-flat valves with the motor running. IMO - and I was just thinking that its not correct for everybody. Pull the coil wire and spin the motor over. The lifters fill with oil. Then its just like doing a solid cam. Tighten the rocker nuts in the correct order when the other valve is in lift. If you can rotate the pushrod with light tension, your good to go.
I've done the same thing driving the car to the muffler shop with uncapped headers before.
i have adjusted the valves with open headers...you can hear the clatter of a valve over the exhaust. As far as driving it to the muffler shop......enjoy the drive...if you get pulled over, tell them what you are doing..worse comes to worse, show up in court with the reciet from the muffler shop, they usually will dismiss it, if you werent driving like Jeff Gordon.

Drive it like its stolen. If the cops pull you over say your wife ran away with a police officer. When they ask what that has to do with anything say you thought they were trying to bring her back to you.

I'm running a 3 inch dual system with a "H" pipe under the differential. Into 3 inch in and out box type stainless packed race mufflers with 3.5 inch X 12 inch chrome tips.
Yeah in like March or April California repealed the rolling exemption and set the date as 1975 and earlier vehicles are exempted. After a few years of that the most wise and leaned leaders will then make it manditory for all vehicles in the state to go through a smog check and fine anyone that had modified their emissions equipment...they've done that before...seems like every 10 years they pull something like this. When I finish my bachelors degree I'm fleeing this rats nest and relocating somewhere with an average IQ above the speed limit...like perhaps North Dakota...or whatever state it is that has no speed limits.

I grew up in Nevada and Oregon without speed limits. So I'm grandfathered in
Montana - was the last state to buckle under the federal mandated 75 mph max freeway limit.
Your pretty safe here up to 90-100 mph on open freeways. I've been just talked to for going 140 in a 75 zone. But then a few days later I got a $35 ticket for going 94 mph. So it's up to the officer
