Default a/c problem oil at core support

heard a squeal coming from engine compartment, sounded like a fan belt squealing,,anyway had a/c on for a few hrs today cruising to a friends house, got out a can of 134 and tried to see if it would take some in the system,,as i filled the freon in i heard a hissing coming from the evaporator ,as i went to the front of car to look, i could feel air excaping from the evaporator and have a bunch of oil coming out of evaporator laying on my core support,,i also noticed a foul smell as i filled the system,,like the smell you get using meratic acid, the smell made my lungs hurt,my wife also smelled it,she must of coughed for 20 minnutes. the air seemed to be excaping from the drivers side of the evaporator, this is the same evaporator that came with the car, when we did the restoration in 2002 i didnt buy a new one, i figured i would get my moneys worth of the existing one, does this sound like the evaporator bit the bullett/ or maby just a line worked its way loose?

You mean the condenser in front of the radiator, don't you? Could be an o-ring at a fitting, or something rubbed through the line.

Although probably similiar, the hoses on my 76 connect to the condensor on the passenger side. If coming from the drivers side, it sounds like a bad condensor. Maybe a rock got into it.

is the condenser hard to replace? i saw them in the catalogs for 190.00, im wondering about the removal, installation, ect,so a hole blew in the tube probably? thats why there is oil on the radiator's core support?? we used the existing one when doing the restoration(to keep a lid on costs) who knows,it may of been the origional one, and it was time for the thing to go..
