I need knowledge ASAP
I rolled into the parking lot in 2nd gear and parked. When we finished eating we came out to discover that it would not reverse.
With the shifter in reverse, the engine would stall. Pressed in the clutch, rolled it back manually....grrr..... and went to put it into First.
The shifter would not move from "neutral" below "reverse" over into the forward gears. With the shifter in that position, 2nd gear was engaged.
...SO... I assume that it is "stuck" in 2nd (the last gear I used before parking) and when the shifter is put into reverse, it tries to engage both 2nd and Reverse, causing it to stall .
anybody got a clue?

Sorry itis age old if you grew up with old floor shift or steering colum shift cars and trucks. The trucks are usually easier as they do the same thing just on the colum under the hood. You know three on the tree.

...I have a feeling that's going to happen to me some day....

You know I have been on the PC for only 5 years now and it still flat amazes me that we can send information in just a few seconds across the world. I am in San Antonio and you are in New Zealand I still find it really neat.

Could be the shifter, or internal to the tranny. Look, if you have mechanical ability a BW or Muncie is not that hard to work on. From under the car, disconncet the shifter & have someone shift & see if the shifter is working properly, if so then the tranny is the problem. If you get it unstuck, don't drive it. If a you have a piece of metal floating around you will strip the cluster & another gear, guaranteed.
Just when he parked it and shifted the shifter got confused and got stuck lol. So he just had to correct it. Just old car syndrome.
Calm down

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
The situation was as I suspected, and the solution was simple:
I got under the car, with the shifter in "neutral" below reverse, and saw that the rear linkage was in the "11-o-clock" position and the forward linkage was (as it should be) straight up.
I grabbed the rear linkage, pulled it to the rear of the car with my hand and *POP* it went to the "12oClock" position. The shifter was freed up and operated properly!
THANKS BUNCHES TO FRIENDS IN TEXAS (AND ARIZONA) WHO CALLED ME AND GAVE THEIR SAGE WISDOM.
The problem was fixed within the hour it happened, thanks to the corvetteforum!

go granny go granny go granny go!!
Yeah, man my grandma is 83 and has a replacement knee, and getting into and out of the car is a "pain in the ***" for her, but she totally gets with it. The car belonged to my uncle and has been in the family since '83 (the year I was BORN)
Since my uncle died last october, it's sat in the garage mostly but it's grandma's ride. I took her out to her first classic chevy show today and she had a BLAST.
Unfortunately, she's trying to sell it so she can afford the balloon payment on the property my uncle bought before he died. She's on social security and can't come up with the 20 large unless she hocks the 'vette
LOL, kiddin (sortof)
used to have the same prob with my 69 Chevelle SS. A serious rebuild on the shift linkage and some shimming and I was good to go
