Default Lemans Gas Cap Removal

This is my first question to this forum. The info on the forum has helped immensely!
I have a Lemans style gas cap on my 1974 coupe. It's pitted and simply awful. I've found a replacement, but someone (bubba?) used solder to fix the cap to it's sleeve after it was screwed down. Any ideas on how to remove this solder from the inside of the gas filler area would be appreciated. I'm afraid to use a soldering gun...boom!!!
Thanks.

Default Gas cap removal

Here is the best picture I currently have. The cap flips up and the original filler cap is underneath. The solder is on the threads of the lemans cap on the inside, connecting it to the flange on the rear deck of the car. You can see them once the cap is opened./Users/admin/Desktop/74 vette cap.jpg

Hope this picture posted properly...first time. Thanks.

Hello,
Safety first OK.
Drive the car if it is in that state until you have used up most of your gas. Then you can drain the remainer of gas into a suitable container to hold.
Leave the cap open to vent and dry the system.

Then you can start with the removal process.
If the gas cap is welded or soldered on, then that may be the method that is needed to remove it.

last resort would be a new gas tank possibly.

Have you seen an "Empty" gas tank near a match or spark? Even when they are completely empty they will pop when you get a torch near them. This is not a recommended action. You can still lose your eyebrows.

You are probably right. Thats one thing that I am always afraid of is getting gas on something, or having a leak someplace.

Trying to replace the gas cap or filler with it on the car really seems risky. Whats your advice to that. Taking out the gas tank altogether?

Thanks for adding your input on this.

Default Thanks and picture

Thanks for the replies so far... and to you, Bob for the photo advice...

Below is a better picture of the cap - top and bottom sections.

The bottom section screws into the flange. Unfortunately, the flange and bottom part of the cap is painted the same color as the car - even the screws holding the flange in are painted. Removing the flange may chip the paint. The material holding the bottom part of the cap to the flange definitely has solder on the threads. I was thinking that there may be some chemical that can dissolve or loosen the solder. Or, is there a tool I can use to drive out the pin holding the top part of the cap to the bottom... I would need to be very careful as the area directly around the pin is painted. I guess if all else fails, I'll have to remove the gas tank and use heat. Thanks again.

Completley drain your tank. Then, refill it with water to push out fumes and air needed to make it explode. Melt the solder with a propane torch or whatever. Drain the water, and refill the tank with fresh gas. If ANY water was remaining in the tank, add one bottle of rubbing alcohol(full tank only)

should be able to tape the area around the cap and use a punch to knock out the pin , and just replace the cap , maybe?
