How can I tell if the exhaust system.. pipes, cat, etc. is Stainless steal or Aluminized?
What does the Catalitic converter do.? (I know I spelled that one wrong..) I'm guessing it's required for emissions..
What do headers do?
I'm trying to do as much work on the car as I can and from what I thought was Bubba's finest work on welding in the new mufflers it seems that is what you do with stainless steal exhausts? Is that true.?
I have to start hugging pipes looking for a leak. I only hear it when in gear giving gas. Push in the clutch, give gas and no putput sound...let out clutch give gas and putput. Just trying to get educated so when I crawl back under her I can understand a little more of what's there.
Take it into a muff shop, they will usually check for leaks free. It could also be something other than exhaust leaks since it is not present at idle.
*shrug* I know sometimes engines make noises that might be mistaken as exhaust leaks but are actually engine issues. I am not the master of this area, but know from experience that this happens. I had what sounded like a small putt like you describe, but turned out to be a floating lifter.
Hmm I just noticed you refer to a manual trans, so it could be something drivetrain related also. Best case scenario is exhaust leak
I spoke to the local dealership service guy. He said it could be the donut gasket between exhaust manifold and pipe that, when torque is put on the engine, causes the pipes to move just enough to allow exhaust escape. I think if it was a lifter tapping I would hear it in gear and out of gear as well. In neutral with clutch out rev gas and no putput. I'm going to take a chance and let the wife sit in the car while I start hugging pipes. Maybe under the car I can feel the leak while not moving. Problem is that she might like playing with the car and I'll have to share.. Thanks for the input!
