Hey guys... my bearing rebuild is coming along. I now have the driver's side bearings apart and am ready to paint and reassemble.
I'm fairly certain the spindle on the pass side is trash. The bearing near the splines is absolutely seized to the shaft.
The driver's side is in question though.
Here is the lower portion:
And here is a look at the upper portion:
I don't believe this one has been apart prior to my disassembling it. The spindle slid straight out leaving all bearings in the car without me really trying to pull it out. (I was holding on to it to steady myself as I sat down when it started to slide out.)
The nicks that you see are where someone cut the races off with a torch. It looks as if someone slip fit the shaft. Thas why it came off easily. The outside bearing has been slipping on the shaft and it will not be possible to adjust that one correctly. I would agree that it is best to replace it with a new one.
I agree dump that spindle. Torching was the way a vette shop owner told me he did them 25 years ago, not good but common to find in older rebuilds. Found it on the posi carrier bearings too. The new and good used spindles are interference fit.
