I have to replace the outer door handle on the drivers side. I have removed the old handle. I cant get the piece apart to reconnect to the new handle. How do I connect everything.
Kilroy, i should have been more precise. I am having trouble with the bottom of the rod that connects at the handle. The top is held by a clip, but I cant get in to remove the pin holding the bottom.
you have to connect the rod to the handle then drop it in the hole then connect it to the other part. on the same note i broke my 2nd drive side outer door handle yesterday. that one didnt last 3 months.
Are you trying to take out the rod that connects to that handle?
You don't have to do that to connect it to the handle.
I have tried this way.... I dont see how you can hook the rod thru the bottom of the handle. It looks like you need to have the rod connected first , then connect at the pivot pin.
You are right. You can't. I just did mine about a month ago and could have sworn thats how I did it, but once I saw this picture I remembered how it looks in there.
You have to slide the little clip off then the pin can come out. You push the clip towards the front of the car and be careful because it is easy to drop in the door. I did that and had to use a long magnet to get it.
Once you get the pin out, you can attach the rod to your handle and drop it in. The hard part is getting the clip back on the pin.
I found this picture on the corvette central site.
Rod has to be attached to the bottom of the handle first, then dropped in, as stated above. The picture below shows the handle/rod. On the rod you see the threaded fitting thing that you adjust up-and-down. What's not shown in that pic is the tiny clip that holds the threaded thing into it's hole. If you don't see that clip it's probably in the bottom of you door somewhere. (image from Ecklers, if it won't show up click here for it http://www.ecklers.com/assets/Illust.../IL_A2191L.jpg
A trick: loop a long piece of thread through the clip, then if you drop it (you probably will) you can fish it out. Once you get it on right pull the thread off.
thanks to all for the help. I will try again tonight. much thanks.
UPDATE SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!! I could not see the clip holding the pivot pin. Once I cleared away the gunk, I was able to remove the pin. The real challenge was reinstalling the nuts on the handle. I ended up using a piece of semi rigid tubing to hold the nut in place so I could just get it threaded.
Thanks again for all the input. It is a good feeling when you finish a job(however tedious) without breaking anything.
