Which would be the best route to go? I have Autometer gauges and a MSD 6AL ignition box, what is the eastiest way to hook everything up. I was looking at the MSD direct hook up to the box, but that wire looks awefully short???
I have the larger model of the msd one, mounted on my steering wheel with some two part epoxy. Truthfully I really don't even use it. I have it set at 6000rpms, figuring by the time it went off and I shift I will already be higher. I have to shift so quick in the first 3 gears I just use my ears.
C'mon..I just took the points out of it a year or so ago!!
Seriously, I ran points in a stock dist and it dyno'd over 800 hp with it. I stuck that POS Crane XR-1 deal in there once. Figured it was neat AND it had a built in rev limiter. Ignition part worked great...rev limiter kep deciding when it wanted to limit you and at what rpm. It kept moving around. Put points back in.
Finally I bought an MSD dist..just for the heck of it..but it does work very nice.
I was running an MSD 6 box on it because a buddy gave it to me. Worked fine even with points triggering it. But it does not have a rev limiter.
I bought the shift light because the stock cable tach is more of a "suggestion" meter rather than anything accurate at high rpm and bouncing around banging gears. I decided a light was a better "suggestion indicator". When it comes on....if it "feels right"..I grab a gear. I actually set it under my shift point. I just want to know when it gets to 6500...or 6800 ...or whatever....I'll decide from that point when it feels good. It's actually a pretty big light, but it does catch your attention even in the daytime. I wired it in with a DIN plug under dash and I can quickly unplug it and remove it anytime I want that resto look.
So I still don't have a rev limiter..sometimes I just like to stretch it out a bit!
BTW- my coil is still a Bosch stock replacement one that came on the car when I got it 10-11 years ago!!
I have that Stewart Warner light as well. Kinda neat as it has the tach in there as well. I agree with Jim that the stock tach as just being a "suggestion".
Thats what I'm using, the proform. It's easy to see in the daytime even with the cover on it. Also the bigest advantage it has in my opinion is to change the shift point you just move the dial, no having to mess with a box full of pills. I like to change my shift points according to track conditions and it makes it easier.
I have mine hooked up to my msd 6al. You can jump it off your wire if your using and elec tach or if your still using the mech tach you can just plug it into the side of the msd for the tach port.
It works flawlessy, was cheaper, and easier to adjust. It was a no brainer for me
Autometer unit mounted on the steering column. Can't miss that sucker when it comes on.
That is what I'm using mounted to the steering column. I have it wired so I can unplug it in a matter of minutes if I want to. Very bright and easy to see even in the daylight. I don't even look at the tach anymore. Just shift when the light comes on. Much more accurate than the bouncy tach/cable drive system. I do have a rev limiter set at 7100 rpm and I shift at about 65 to 6700 rpm. I have bounced it off the limiter a bunch of times.

I have an MSD one that I got a couple years ago, and it's still in the box. Can't figure out how to mount it so it looks good and is easy to see w/out looking down.
Mount it on the steering column. You won't need to look down, trust me. Just run it without the yellow rubber cap, that is for night-time use. I'll post a pic. tonight of my installation....,
You don't need to look at it. It is bright enough that you can't miss it. When it comes on you know it. That is what I like about it. I can keep my eyes on the road/track and shift when the light comes on. No need to look at the tach or light. Mine is mounted right on the column dead center.
big G beat me to it!
Yes, the whole interior lights up when we run night-time drags. You can see the light from the stands easily. Gordonm, you gotta work on that reaction time...
