Default 454 HO size question.

Does anyone know if the HO 454 will fit under a BB hood with the manifold that it comes with and a holley carb (4150 series). I just got a BB hood and would like to avoid using an L88 hood.

Thanks

I had a LS6 454 with the medium riser intake under a stock 75 hood with a 2 inch air filter on a dropped base chrome air cleaner. I did have to clean the underside of the hood with a little cutting of the fiberglass but nothing involving the top layer of the hood just some of the cross bracing.

Hmmm...The hood I got is not exactly a normal BB hood, but a little higher from what the seller was telling me. I remember him describing it as halfway between an L88 hood and a BB hood. So it's not as tall as an L88, but taller than a BB/LT-1 hood. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

You will probably need a L88 hood to run with that manifold. Low rise air cleaners are not good because they interfere with the carb vents so I would not use one in an attempt to use use the hood you have.

compare the edel torker II intake to yours , thats just about the limit on a standard BB hood , even w/a drop base. http://www.edelbrock.com :smash:

I need to measure this new hood first. I think the HO may fit under there. Again, it's a little bit taller than a standard BB hood. Worst case scenario is that I get an aluminum(?) LS5 intake and run that. I KNOW that will fit. I'm not getting an L88 hood. I don't mind they way they look, but I like the BB hood better.

Maybe I'll get the LS6 intake then, the HO has rectangle ports. I'm sure the LS6 manifold is pricey, but I want to use this hood.

Steve, I came very close to buying the LS6 manifold for my L88 because I prefer the looks of the smoother hood too. My only reason for not using it is because I need the cold air package to help my 12:1 live on the street. I believe the going price on this aluminum square port, lowrise manifold is about $400. The price for one of these will probably never go down. You may not make any money or be able to sell it very fast, but you won't lose it either. Make sure it has not been filled, cracked, drilled, or otherwise abused.

I was told that it would only be about a 15 hp penalty against using the L88 highrise on my L88, not bad. But I don't have any dyno reports to verify this. I was not able to find any other manifolds either stock or aftermarket to fit, except the 3x2 lowrise for 68-69. I do have one of these setups, but, the 4150 carb is the better arrangement in all categories but looks! Someday I will bolt it on with the standard big block hood. Maybe with water injection it will be ok. To much to do first however.

Chuck
