the plate is to allow a non q-jet to seal on the manifold, you should use a (thin) open gasket on each side of the plate.

Is this 1/4" spacer a phenolic one ? Of course there should be gaskets...but I run a Holley 750 on an old school Eldelbrock intake with just gaskets and a heat shield...which...gives more hood clearance and no fuel boiling issues..."no spacer"

hmmm.... the spacer is a dark hard plastic like material....... i'll double check it all tomorrow in the light to see exactly what is going on..... i could have swore that my carb bolted up nicely without the spacer... maybe i'm wrong

You are not wrong..often those thick spacers are used to prevent fuel in carb from "boiling" on very hot days...my solution was a GM heat shield because I did not have room for a spacer...(my wing nut on the air cleaner clears hood by 3/4")....so I had no choice but to use the thin heat shield....

When I run a Holley on my 73' with the Edelbrock 2101
I must use the phenolic spacer ...the one I have is about 1/2" thick and I use a gasket on either side (2 gaskets, top and bottom) of the spacer

The spacer I use has 4 holes, one for each venturi.
I suppose you could use the wide open spacer (no holes) but I have never tried it.

I do know that without the phenolic riser I did have problems with performance.
As soon as I added the riser the carb worked great.
Good luck
