Nine volts is a myth. (There's been several threads regarding this.) The resistor wire limits the CURRENT into the coil, it does not modify the system voltage from 12 down to 9.
Shafrs3 is correct. The additional current will erode the points.
Keep in mind that you may also burn up the coil (from excess CURRENT, and the resulting higher power dissipation).
