What happens to the standard point ignition if you are running 12 volts into it instead of the resistor wire voltage of 9 volts?

Shafrs3 is correct. The additional current will erode the points.
Keep in mind that you may also burn up the coil (from excess CURRENT, and the resulting higher power dissipation).
