Default Which transmission?

Does anyony know which 4-speed manual transmission came in a '79 Vette? Also the ratios for trans and rearend? A friend just bought a '79 with a 383 stroker and a blower. He's wondering how the trans and rear will hold up.

Thanks,
Rob

Depends on how much power the engine is making, how sticky the tires are and how he drives it.

I believe they had an M-22 and they hold up to the power pretty well. However, sticky tires and a hard launch will tear the rear end up pretty quick.

Borg-Warner. UH is wide ratio (2.64), UK is close ratio (2.43).

No way is it an M-22. They only came in the late 60 high hp vettes, and even then they were an option.

Doh M-20 or 21, that's what it was. Too many numbers for my head to keep track of any more.

Thanks for all the help! I'll get him to check the vin# and also the guy he bought it from to see if any mods were done to the trans or rear. I also just found an old chart I had with pics to help identify transmissions.
The engine is only running about 4 pounds of boost, so we think around 500hp and Michelin street tires.

Thanks again,
Rob

'79...Only 27 years to modify the car...hmmm wonder what transmission it has.

My '79 came with a ... surprise... Muncie M-22

Also 4.11 differential gear ratio, neither was an option in '79.

Get under the car and look at the transmission, the cover on the driver side will tell you Muncie or Borg-Warner.

Rounded bottom side cover held on with 7 bolts is a Muncie, flat bottom side cover held with 9 bolts is a B-W.

Check the passenger side for a casting number, if you post that, someone will have the resources to tell you what year it was made and what the original gearset was. But any Muncie can be turned into an M-22, just drop the money for the gearset.
