My stock 71 BB motor had a temperature sensor that screwed into a port on one of the cylinder heads. I've since updated to AFR 305 heads but there's no provision for a temp sensor. Any ideas or suggestions on how to approach this?
How about a later model thermostat housing: http://NHvette.com/ftp/in/spreader_bar_01.jpg
Of course, this gives the temp of coolant entering the radiator ... not the temp in the head.
A faulty thermostat could make for incorrect readings. I use this to switch the electric fan.
If you have a plug in the coolant passage of the intake ... that might be a better location.

Yeah, I'm not real keen on putting the temp sensor above the thermostat - too much opportunity for problems. I will be going with electric fans so I'll keep that in mind though.
I do have two ports on the intake that I could put a sensor in, but they are both in the very front of the intake and would be highly visible. I would like to avoid this if possible.
I know there are lots of people running AFR heads who have worked around this issue before. I wonder if it's possible to have a hole drilled and tapped somewhere in the head, although the thought of that is a bit

AFR did this to the heads when I purchased my SB heads. It cost an extra 25 dollars but was well worth it.
My Brodix heads did not have the temp sender hole for my small block. I drilled and tapped myself. Simple procedure if the heads are off the engine. However, if you can have this done for $25 bucks, I would certainly go for it unless you are just looking for the experience. The tap will cost nearly that much.
