Default 4L60E Question

Is there an inexpensive way to put one of these into a C3?

BTO has a standalone kit for $1100, but that seems awfully high. Is there another way to make it go? I picked up a new 4L60E for $25 at an auction here to put in mine. If I can't make it work, I guess I could sell it for a profit, but would rather install it and get overdrive.

Suggestions?

They're a PITA when the electronics don't work right. Get an '89 up 700R4, no electronics and less fickle.

TCI has a kit to run it for 670.

Still pretty steep, but it is much cheaper than tossing it and getting a 700R4. It looks like I am looking at about 1500 to pick up a 700R4 with all the pieces that it needs to work.

What do you think I could get for a new 4L60E?

Use it like a transmission equipped with a manual valve body.

Since the valve body is controlled via electric solenoids, perhaps you could make a custom shifter that would electronically activate 1-2-3-4 sequentially as you move the shift lever forward or backwards.
I suppose it's even possible to mount shift paddles on the steering wheel to manually control the shifts.

There is aftermarket support for strengthening 4L60E transmissions for use behind serious horse power, much like the 700R4 and 2004R.

Paddle shifter? I want that? Do I have to get a 4L60E, or can I do it with my 700R4? Has anyone here done it?

Looking at the instruction manual for the TCI system, a paddle shifter would actually be REALLY simple.

There are three wires for the manual shift control. The first wire activates manual control, the other 2 control shift up/shift down. A momentary 12V switch makes the shift.

The torque convertor is locked/unlocked on another 12V input (energized = locked).

I think I am going to make a bench system to try this out, then make it happen. This could be a great winter project.

Can you put it back in an automatic mode, or is it manual shift always? Go for it, keep us posted. I am very interested.

You can put it back into auto mode by grounding the auto/manual switch, but you have to have a computer to control it in auto mode. As long as it is in manual mode, you don't need a computer.
