You can get a newer electronic tach and change the face, or there is a guy on the forum that will do the conversion for you.
Do a search and you should come accross him. I actually talked to him in the beginning of the year and he's nice to work with, and reasonably priced. I'm still unsure if I will use silver faced guages or do this as well.

I think I read a thread on this and the poster said that the two screw holes in the face were in a different pattern.

I just bought a used tach off of ebay and I have an autometer electric tach I am going to use to convert it. I will try and remember to document what I do.
Does anyone know how to change my mechanical tach to an electronic one and retain the stock apperance?
OR ... you can change the distributor for a lot less trouble and similar $ (by the time you buy elec tach & have it refaced).
Brand new "Tach Drive" HEI (clone of GM 4-pin HEI but w/tach drive). Complete from coil thru mechanical tach drive to main drive gear. It will not fit under a 71 chrome ignition shield ... it will fit under a 75 shield. Part Number 9200TDR about $163 at Star Performance 1-800-625-9454. http://www.starperf.com/tabloid/page_50.htm

What's the difference between Star Performance and one of these?
RE: 27518 ... it has better crossgear (even better than OE) ... and it's been test-fired, and supposedly the curve is "coordinated" ??? ... It appears to be made on a different casting from Star or 47935 (it appears to've been made by Davis Unified Ignition) all that at better than $400 above Star's. Your call if worth the $ diff.
Of course, both 47935 & 27518 have the "E-name" associated with 'em ... for whatever that's worth ... your call.
