I was driving today and put on the turn signal at a light. Once I turned and it cancelled I noticed that when I went to change lanes they wouldn't work. They did light up inside when I put the brake on, and I noticed that the park lights were on when I stopped in traffic (foot on the brake) reflection from the car in front. The brake lights work (saw them in a store window reflection) but if I touch the brakes the front signal lights (park lights) go on and it's indicated inside the car as well. Is it a short somewhere or just a wire grounding itself? Thanks for any answers.
Lighting/electical problems are very tough to trouble shot and even more so from a distance. There are two places to check. The turn indicator switch (yeah you gotta pull the steering wheel - which is real fun if you have the telescoping steering) and the gang plug on the steering column. Yeah, it does sound like it could be a short and those are especially fun to run down.
When you turn on the signal light does the indicator on the dash blink or does it stay lit?
If it stays lit this is GM's way of letting you know you have a bad bulb...somewhere
When I turn on the signal light nothing comes on, on the dash. However, when I touch the brakes, both indicators light up on the dash and the parking lights also come on brighter than normal. I turned on the parking lights and touched the brakes. It's like driving with your lights on and touching the brakes, the back ones become brighter - same for the front lights in my case.
Maybe I should mention the car is a 1976 L82 with a 4 speed if that has any bearing on anything.
Geeze..... Hmm..... I would start by replacing the flasher
On my 73' theres one on the fuse panel and one in the passenger side rear compartment
I always use heavy duty flashers so after a while you dont get that fast blinking.
Its just a guess and a starting point... it could be something more involved but flashers are cheap
When I first got my car, it was doing exactly what you are saying. It turned out that the hazard lights were on and the hazard flasher (I believe that is the one on the fuse box) didn't work.

Do the Hazards work alright?
You''re a genius Bob, you to Yukon! No the flashers don't work. But I went outside to check them and for some reason they were in the "ON" position. I pulled the **** out (the cars, not mine ) and "voila". Everything's back to normal. I guess I'll work on getting the hazzards working next. This problem: solved Thanks guys.
