Power steering help needed

Default Power steering help needed

The low down.
Rebuild power steering pump, control valve, and cylinder myself.

Put it back together, steering was good but valve sprung a leak.

Researched here found out its better to buy one than rebuild myself.

Bought rebuilt valve from Corvettes of Houston.

Steering is ok but when I turn full left, I have to fight like hell to get it to turn back to the right. Once it comes off of full left it mellows out and easy to turn again. This does not happen going full right and did not happen b4 valve change.

Is this a sticky valve?

I believe that there is an adjustment you make on the valve. I think that it is a screw-type adjustment (It's been awhile since I have done it) This directs the fluid evenly in both directions. If you have the front end up on jack stands and move the screw all the way in one direction, the wheels will turn that direction. The key is to try to get it so that it gives the same resistance in both directions.

Failed to mention I did balance the valve. It did seam a little flakey to balance, had to redo 3-4 times. Maybe I will try again but the wheel does not turn while sitting there.

Did you have all the weight off of the wheels? If it isn't off the ground, it will be difficult to get it perfect.

Yes wheels were off the ground, wheels still off the ground when it locks turning full left.

You should undo the ram connection at the frame and adjust the valve, this stops your wheels from slamming around as you do the adjustment and you are better able to fine tune the valve setting. I found that the nutural position was fairly broad (1 turn or more of valve). When the ram stops moving in and out you have it right! After adjusting you can move the ram (engine running) with very little effort by hand and it should stay where you put it.

Wheels off the ground, ram disconnected, balanced the valve 2-3 times more. Wheels do not turn on their own.

Hook up ram, when I get close to full left turn the wheel takes off and it's a beyotch to get off full left turn.

Disconnect ram, valve needs balanced again. This valve has to be fubar.

This would only be a stupid question if it didn't happen to me. Are you sure that you put the hoses back in the correct locations? I swore that I put mine back in the correct location, but I didn't. I had them crossed. When I would move the wheel a little, the wheel would take off to one direction (violently). You wanna talk about scratching your head!!

I think this would have to be a valve issue, I rebuilt my untouched 74 unit and had no problems. Did you say that you rebuilt your original unit first then bought a new one? Is the problem the same with either unit?

Are you sure that the hoses are connected correctly, I had mine connected backwards when I replaced the valve,swapped them around,problem solved. good luck!

I am 100% possative the hoses are hooked up right. I checked rechecked and triple checked them.

mr303: Yes I rebuilt original but it leaked after a few miles. Come to think of it, It was really blowing fluid only when I turned left. Hmm, something to dwell on, I quit for the nite b4 I really start to get upset

Bought rebuilt ps control valve unit from BAIRS today. Should arrive next week. Never had any trouble with anything I bought from them. Will let you know how install turns out.
