Default Installing Side A/C Vents ?

I replaced the dash and wished now that I had installed the A/C vents on the sides beforehand. Since I didn't I am learning that the screws in back that hold the vent in place are a real ***** to get in.
Does someone have some good advice on installing these?

If you are talking about the chrome plastic vent *****, I have read where they can be removed and replaced by pulling them straight out. You might want to wait until the vinyl is warm. Best way would be to dismantle from backside, but is a pain to remove the panel to get there.

Assuming you're working on a 79-
Rotating the adjustable vent 180 degrees will allow removal from the mounting frame if you want to clean it before installation in the dash. If you then reassemble the parts and position the assembly behind the dash the tab for the "inside" hex head screw is fairly easy to get positioned and the hexhead started first to hold everything in place. The outer fastener can then be installed. Use an awl to locate the hole in the dash and line up the outer mounting tab holes. Tighten the inner fastener to hold the position. I used a socket and two short extensions with the fastener held in the socket with duct tape. On the driver side this tool will be just about level and needs to be fed in from the forward side of the hood release bracket. There's no getting around the fact that it is tedious and done a lot by feel and knowing that when you do hit the mounting tab hole the screw will thread in. Taking the lower seat cushion out gives more room for your body. Good luck-this is backache territory.
