I had headman headers for factory side pipes on my 69-427. worked well. Made a lot of heat. Get coated ones and you're gold.
Are you going to use the 69 type or the 67 type? The 67 type are very loud, with headers. You'll need ear muffs on a trip.

Depends on the car. Small exhaust port (390 & 400 hp) heads can use the Heddman side exhaust unequal length headers, but they're fairly small tube, and interfere with A/C case, if so equipped (mine is). I intend to use LS-7 heads with the large square ports, so I'll need to use a header plate and modify the last two tubes (re-route/re-weld) on the RH side. They are attractive precisely because the exit real close to the stock area and angle. The others that I am familiar with are the Hookers that have their own sidepipe, and the Stahl units that are race units, pricey and very large tube.
I own a set of the BB Heddmans that I recently purchased used from a fellow forum member if you want some specs or pictures.
Although I'm not done yet, I'm currently swapping to a bb and using factory sidepipes with headers in my '68. The headers are Heddman, coated, and made for side pipes in C3's. They are available from Summit for around $400 and look awesome.
For the mufflers, check out www.sweet-thunder.com. They make a nice performance side exhaust muffler (stock outside but larger chambers inside) that I got without the header pipe. It's specifically made to use with headers. You have the header pipe (the tube between the header and the muffler) custom made to fit your particular header. Since this is a new setup on my car, I needed new mufflers anyway. I think I paid around $325 for the pair. If you already have good mufflers, I'm sure an exhaust shop could cut them and fab a new header pipe to mate with your headers. Good luck!
