I saw the gasoline method discussed here on a mirror repair thread a while ago....I won't vouch for the glass damage, but I have not heard of an alternative....G/L
I don't know what year you are talking about but I have successfully done this on a 73. I used lacquer thinner without any damage to either the reflective part of the glass. The trick is to leave it overnight (hopefully somewhere where the fumes won't be objectionable - your garage?) and then try to wiggle the glass out. If it is still tight, soak it somemore.
The lacquer thinner disolves the adhesive which looks like silicone. You can reattach the old glass to the new base using silicone adhesive btw.
