J Tool for Fuel Pump Pressure?
I'm having problems with the idle surging from 400 rpm to 600 rpm and then finally smoothing out on my 82. Have already replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump (82 aftermarket). I have read all the posts about checking the fuel pump pressure. What is a J tool? I think I need to make sure I'm getting adequate pressure before I move on to anything else.

82 is injected right? I've never heard it called a J tool before but what you need has a dial gauge on the top with a hose coming out the bottom. The bottom of the hose will have a fitting to screw onto the schrader (sp?) valve somewhere on the pressurized side of the fuel system. I just saw one at my local Sears yesterday... think they wanted $30 for it. You could probably find one cheaper somewhere.

82 fuel lines do not have a schrader valve for checking fuel pressure.
The factory tool for this purpose is a flexible hose that installs between the throttle bodies and it has a guage in the center.
I have one you could use if you were in my part of the world.

It5's easier to installa pressure gauge with a t fitting in place of the fuel filter that's bolted on the pass side frame rail just aft of the starter, the TB crossover line can be a pain to remove and the flared tubes can leak if reinstalled
