Are there any differences in gas tanks from the various suppliers? At Carlisle and in catalogs, I've seen tanks ranging from $139 to $279. Some boast being made in the USA, some made in Canada, some with "all the correct indentions", some with special logos. The tank is still available from the GM dealer. Would the GM parts number tank actually be a reproduction?
The tank I need to replace is on a 1972. The Vette has not run and the tank has been dry for about 4 years.
Any recommendations and what else should I replace while having to go through the labor of replacing the tank?
Does the tank have holes in it? Maybe it needs a steam cleaning and you'll be ok. Do replace all the rubber lines...and check your gauge sender while you can.
When you drop the tank...be careful of the vent gizmo up on the drivers side. If not careful you can snap that off...replacements sell for $100 or more.
If you do pull the tank, after checking the operation of the sending unit, calibrate it. Lift it up to the top and see if the guage reads full. Lower it to the bottom and see if the guage read empty. Carefully bend the rod to adjust the guage reading. Personally, I would want the most accurate reading at empty.
If you remove the filler neck, note its position. If you rotate it upon reinstallation, the filler neck won't be centered in the filler hole in the deck lid.
I replaced the fuel tank in my '73 Coupe, and I have to go through remove and reinstall to replace the rusted straps and cushion strips! Order this stuff to have it on hand before you start.
JB,
I need to replace the tank in my 74. I dont need to buy an original looking tank, but for the money I think Quanta [ Quantaproducts.com]
offers the best deal for $198. These are original configuration and markings as well as a very good quality.

I replaced the tank, straps, and pads in my 70. Bought the tank from GM. The original part number was still good, and the tank came with a GM sticker. It sure looked identical to the original tank. There were some differences in tanks, even within years, based on which emissions options were on the car. The "vented" vs "non-vented" cap makes a difference in tank design... there is a tiny, non-replaceable vent on the top of some tanks. Make sure you get the right tank. I don't know who is making the tanks for GM. I doubt that GM is making them. About the straps... I bought new ones, but could not get them to work because of the tight bends at the top ends. The original straps have some real tight bends in them, and the replacements are not pre-bent. Without the tight bends, the straps were not long enough to reach the lower mounting bolts. I could not get the new ones to work, so I sandblasted, refinished and re-used the original straps (they were in good shape). Pads... everywhere I have ordered these from I end up getting strips of tar-paper (asphalt roofing) instead of "real" pads. I can see the white lines from the roll. I could have gone to Home Depot and bought those.
I think I have a used 72 tank in my "box of parts" It doesn't have the vent on it anymore and would need to be sealed with one of the kits that Eastwoods sells but you can have it for what I paid($60) + shipping if you want to give it a shot. I have never used this tank but it was a good deal at the time.I have used the Eastwood sealer kit and if you follow all the steps it will work.
