Torque or HP, probably designed in 61 for the 63 model 327s with no
thought to 427/454s to come. They designed it to be a sports
car short wheelbase independent rear to go around corners.

Sloppy stock posi set up, stress risers, egg shaped pin hole for the cross pin,76-79 ring gear bolts, early Eaton carriers with 10-18 spiders, a lot of abuse with slicks, HP, and launches.
They can be built to be pretty strong but you won't get that from a stock type rebuild.I took a eaton carrier that was hit by the pinion and cut into it. I tuned and polished it and set it up with 373 Tom's gears, Then put it behind 375 HP and gave it to my 20 year old and told him to hammer it. He had solid dual strips about 150' long, 5k hard miles later it still locks up in posi and has no clutch hammer, is quiet and leak free.
Sort of planning on a 750hp turbocharged motor. Planning on something around a 3.08-3.23 rear end.
Just gotta figure out how to make a rearend that wont keep breaking.
Toms 12 bolt conversion will hold that. Other than that you are probably asking for blown rears and halfshafts and spindles and just about everything else back there if you plan on hooking that much power up.

==> tomsdifferentials.com he has it all, give him a call.
==> and/or search here to find 427HotRods' custom Diff setup (looks to be very strong)
BTW; i went with:
- Tom's BOE posi unit
- a 70's case (stronger than a 60's case)..... i selected one with no significant core shift, checked it for cracks, removed all the flash, went with the HD caps and bolts, drilled it for drain plug,
- Richmond 4.11s.
- HD cover
- International Axle BB style HD yokes. (Toms units are even stronger I understand, but i like the stock look)
- solid Spicer u-joints
- custom 3" 1/2 shafts
- new HD Spindles
- cryo'd everything except the Posi unit.
Worked fine in my car with a 575 HP 468 (soon to be replaced with a stouter 496), however i only used loaned slicks for a few launches....i'm a 15" 70 series street tire guy. if i have any spindle issues i'll go with Tom units there as well.

The 12 bolt starts at 3.73. I need about 3.08 or so.
If you check Tom's website, they mention that they are coming out with a Billet case in late 2006. Give them a call and see if this case will be able to accomodate lower ratios like the 3.36 or 3.08. Here is a link to the page with the billet case: http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/catalog.asp?pg=22
pef427 is looking into a Fab9 solid axle for his car. This ultimately may be a stronger, cheaper and lighter solution than the Tom's IRS.
Either solution should be strong enough to handle 750 H.P. there are people in the low 9 second range using the Tom's setup, so they can definitely take the abuse.
it's been a few years, but one of the recognized diff guys/builders told me that....... thicker in several key areas if i recall correctly.
Cool, thanks! Oddly enough this works out perfectly for me - I'm in the middle of a suspension rebuild and I'm replacing the '67 4.11 with a 70s 3.55 I bought from a forum member.
