Default Backfiring thru the carb

From what I've read this is caused by a lean condition or retarded timing. Is this correct? I have a presistant backfire when I nail it down. And at low rpms if I'm not very very light on the throttle until I get up past 1800-2000 she will kill on me.

Well, I'm at 70 sized jets. Should I put some bigger ones in? I got 72's and some 76's.

Justin you have already tried the bigger jets and they did not
get rid of your problem. The pictures you put up yesterday of your
plugs they had a nice gray color. Engines runnig lean have plugs
more to the white side. It wont hurt to try the bigger jets and
see what happens. Put a better close up pcture of your plugs on
here maybe i'm wrong.

Well maybe I need to advance my timing. My initial is 12. Maybe my cam needs more.

looks closer to rich then lean to me. I wish you had someting to check top dead center on your piston and the mark on the balancer,
you pulled on the outer ring off the balancer till it was about half
off the inner hub and knoocked it back on with a rubber mallet, that
worries me as to wether the outer ring has now slipped.

A stock replacement. Liquid ones exceed my willing to spend budget for a non functional pos car.

Justin.. If I remember correctly you have had so many problems with this build and it has caused you much aggrivation.
I'm sure you put your heart and soul into this build.... not to mention the $$$

Maybe you could start a new thread and list EVERY part including dimensions down to the very last detail that you used to build this engine
There are many many people with many years of experience on this forum
If you do list EVERYTHING and I mean EVEYTHING! perhaps somebody can find an error in your setup or mismatched parts or something to resolve your problems.

Please dont take this the wrong way but it may help and it certainly cant hurt.
Everytime I read about a problem your having I feel very bad for you........ It shouldnt be this way.

I hope this helps, or at the least, I diddnt insult you as that is not my intention but this build sems to be plagued with problems.

If you think I am out of line let me know and I will post an open apology
Good luck....... honestly
Bob

If you are lean you couldnt be to far lean to be back firing like that my sa 770 is running 72 primary and 75 secondary from factory . Lars does say that sa's are setup lean but it shouldnt back fire like that. Hope this helps.

Best Regards

I dont blame you...I am planning on rebuilding the top end on my L-48 and It's taking me weeks just to decide what I want to do.
But with the help of certain members I believe it will be fine when I'm done
