Does the LT-1 big block hood give more clearance than the stock SB hood. If so how much more at the air cleaner.
Steve, My stock 70 LT-1 has .3" clearance between the highest point on the air cleaner lid to the bottom of the hood. That is why I found it hard to believe when someone here on the forum said a stock hood would work with an LT-1 engine setup. Before you ask, I do have the stock spacer under the carb.
I have a Victor Jr. intake with a 3/8 carb spacer and a Mighty Demon carb and stock LT1 air cleaner on mine. All this under the LT 1 hood. Not much clearance maybe 3/8 of an inch but it all fits. I doubt this would fit under the stock Vette hood.
The LT-1 (or BB) hood provides 3/8" more hood clearance with a 14" round air cleaner. If you use a triangular air cleaner there is slightly more additional height with the LT-1 hood.
This was determined by swapping hoods on a 350/350 specifically to see the difference. I was amazed the difference is so small.
I run a small block, Victor Jr. with the carb pad milled .25", Holley 108-70 (.417" tall w/gasket), the standard LT-1 drop base air cleaner, and have 3/8" hood clearance to the standard hood.
Good question. I was just about to post the same thing. I love this place! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one having some of the same problems.
