Default Cylinder head ID

Hi All
Im a but confused
I just checked the casting numbers on my heads from my 73 L-48 and they came up as 1974 350/400

The car was built in Feburary 1973, can this be correct?

333882.....74-80...350/400......76cc chambers

Thanks
Bob

Might be depending on who you want to believe. The Black Book says those are 74 year model heads but my other resto guide says they were used in 73 and later. I find it interesting that they call for either "993" or "882" in '73. The "993" heads were somewhat smaller chambers so that makes me pause.

What are the date codes on then heads and block. If the head dates match closely with the block casting dates I would say they were original. If the heads are later than the assy date on the block then they are obviously not original. Look for the date code next to the casting number on the heads.

Thanks Mark
The other #s I have from the heads are J233 and 271 (could be 270) hard to read

the block castings reads 3970010 and A333
I know the block is the original as the stamped # coencides with the VIN

The Heads date code translates to Sept 23 1973. Could be service replacement. The engine casting date code must be A233 or A273. The letter A is Jan The next 2 numbers are the day and the last # is the year. They don't use the letter I. Some years use the last 2 #s for year.James B on the forum has a set of 73 correct heads for your car for $200 plus shipping, rebuilt if you need a correct set! They are NICE! He bought them from me and didn't use them.

Thanks 63mako
I suppose I could have read the block code wrong... the A333 may very well be 233 as the stamped # does match the vin
As far as the heads go... I will be removing them soon either to have them milled or possibly replacing them with a smaller cc set
Thanks very much for your help!

Yes the block is correct. AFR heads are the way to go if you are upgrading!

Better heads and a larger cam will wake that 73 right up, look into the top end packages out there for a match set of parts, Trick Flow and Edelbrock make good heads so their packages look nice
