Default Questions before '79 engine reinstallation.

First off, There is a yellow hard plastic line coming out of my firewall just to the passenger side of my car. It is about 1/8" dia. and appears to have been broken off. What is it? Where does it go? Do I need it?

Secondly, I am putting all new decals uncer my hood. I didn't save my emissions decal. :( I thought there were only two: L-48 and L-82. However, I have now learned that there were multiple L-48 decals in '79. How do I know which one I need!?

One more thing... I am putting an Edelbrock square-bore carburetor on my Holley dual pattern intake. Do I need to run one of those thin square-bore plates that Jeg's sells to prevent a vacuum leak, or can I just use a gasket.

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm really anxious to my baby running again ASAP!

TIA,

#1 -- to me it sounds like a vacuum line. See what is on the other side of the firewall, where it is going too. Do you have any vacuum operated items that are not working ? Vent controls, headlight doors, etc.
Do you have a vacuum line going to the valve that is in line in the heater hose? There should be a vacuum operated valve in one of the heater hoses. The vent controls will open and close that valve via a vacuum line.

#2 -- What different decals do they offer for an L-48??? There may be a 49 state and a California, but I don't know of any reason there would be any different ones. Unless there was a change mid-year.

#3 -- If the intake is a dual pattern, then you should only have to use the paper gasket for the Edelbrock spreadbore. Lay the gasket in place and make sure there is enough material around all of the edges. You should be o.k.

Apparently there is an L-48, a high altitude L-48, and a California Emissions L-48. I'm pretty sure I have the regular L-48, but I'm not positive. As for the vacuum line, all of my vac accessories seem to be working. (As far as I know.) I've tried to look in the AIM with no luck so far. I think I'll dig into it more tonight.

Thanks,

I think that the yellow tubing you are questioning is to the water shut off valve in your heater hose. Roger

Is that the round metal thing that's inline in the heater hose on the passenger side of the car?

Yes, it controls the hot water flow to your heater core. Roger

roger is correct on that white vacuum hose, and on my 79 L-48 i have a sticker in front of the driver on the firewall next to the hood hold down attachment & spring, you should have another one on the hood, driver's side, top left corner.this would be your vacuum hose routing for emissions, both stickers are silver with black letters.

Yes, the white line goes to the heater control valve.
