Default Power Steer Pump Removal

Does the alternator and fan shroud have to come off to replace the power steering pump?

To get more room to work it wouldn't hurt, but no. You will hav to loosen the alt and take it's belt off though, and fit it around th blades of the fan until you get it of. Then you can get the power steering belt off same way, and replace the pump. Word of advice...before hand, rent the pulley puller and have the new pump ready. Once you have the old pump out, fix it into a vise, and pull the pulley. Reverse order to install it on the ne pump...make not if shaft length and pulley's position on the shaft so it's spaced the same and your belts line up right when you get the new pump installed.

You don't have to remove the alt but it's a lot easier if you do along with bracket that is held on by the two 9/16 bolts just above the pump.
Do like Duarango said and have the pulley remover and installer ready. If you can't get hold of one find a mechanic and he should swap the pulley and lower bracket for $10.

This will also be a good time to do any cleaning if gunk has built up, and to replace any worn belts. You'll have access to some things that sometimes need attention and don't get it because you don't want to remove the accessories.

As far as the pulley remover goes, it depends on what year you have. Both my '72 and '73 have keyed shafts, so the pulley comes off of the pump pretty easily.

But it's definitely worth it to remove the alternator first!

Yes, and while you're at it, you may as well remove the alt bracket. It's only a few more bolts and you'll have a chance to clean up everything while you're at it.

New power steering pump is in and working with no leaks. I left the lower mounting brackets on the pump for removal and installation. I slid the alternator all the way over and had enough room for removal and installation.

Thanks again for the answering my questions
