Would appreciate some help/advice on door hinges. 74 cpe driver side has about 1/4 in vertical movement. Does this mean new hinges (lower and upper) or would new pins and bushing take care of my problem? Have not removed door but motion is in pin or looks like it to me. HELP!
Are you sure the hinge is not loose? Even with the bushings shot I wouldn't think there would be this much movement unless the hinge in wallowed out. In that case hinge replacment in in order. I know that others have replaced their bushings w/o removing the door.
I'm sure the bushings are shot. The pins and hinges are usually fine. Is the "S" shaped spring still ok?
Those are some heavy doors.
But the bad news,..the hinges need to removed to replace the bushings and getting to the upper hinge means dash pad and speedo/tach panel removal as well as removal of the door of course.
It's an all Saturday job but worth it.
I have an original GM upper driver's side door hinge with good rollers, rebuilt with new bushings and a new spring,it's good and tight,..A+ shape..$60 plus ship if interested.
I did my driver's side bushings and didn't remove the upper hinge from the car. I just unbolted it from the door, removed the door and lower hinge, drove the pin out with a hammer, installed the oversize bushings from a Help! brand kit, and reinstalled the pin. I did the lower one while it was bolted to the door (for leverage).
Batman,..I was wondering if the inner half of the upper door hinge could stay attached,..so you can drive the pin out of the upper hinge with the door in place? If so, good news.
