Well, my new 12t press came in today!
Had to wait to assemble it and play until I got my clients buttoned up for the storm, but got done there about 6.
Then, out to the garage. Got my lower controll arms disassembled, what a PITA! One bushing came out pretty easily with some convincing from the air chisel. The second one took a bit more convincing. The other arm was tough, ended up burning out the rubber and then chiseling the shells out. The inner sleeves were completely rusted to the shafts...Grrrr..
Here is the Press with the bent left Lower A-arm shaft in it
Close up
Got it straightned up
NIce, Saved myself $70 for a new shaft already, yet another handy tool paying for itself
Excellent...love it when a tool pays for itself with one use!
What make is the press? I was looking for one and found a 12 ton at Northern Tool for $87. They also have the 12 ton Torin for $109. Can't decide which to go with.
Sez Rand on the box, was $86 on ebay and 46 to ship from west coast fl to Boca Raton. It is better than the one from Harbor freight, and seems to work ok. I might need an extra set of setup blocks.
TA Bushings and spindels are next. Ujoints got to get done too, Between the sand blast cabinet and this thing and some small tools, I am in for about $500 in new tools for the project. The blast cabinet was $200 to the door, and 2 days of blasting parts is a Lot better than the week or so I spent last time with a brush wheel on a bench grinder.
Except for the color, it looks very similiar to Harbor Freight press. I looked at several 12 ton presses and there did not seem to be any significant difference in the lowend stuff. I was driving by Harbor Freight last Friday and took a look at their 12 ton press. Price was $109.With a 15% coupon it would drop the price under $94. Not only is it 2/3's the price, but if something is wrong its easlily returnable.
You'll find many uses for that press. I got mine a year or so ago and have used it to press out control arm bushings (with a socket), straighten things, etc. I got the Harbor Freight 12T, no problems yet.
Got the cheapie Harbor Freight blast cabinet too. Built the stand, ran internal light, and hooked up vaccuum system. Saved $ over ready to go cabinets. That thing is a must for any shop.
I went to a local art supply store and got a roll of acetate to protect the inside glass. I just cut/change a new sheet everytime the old one gets cloudy. Takes about 5 minutes to change, saves the glass.
