I would pull the air filter and look into it to see if it is dribbling. If not then there should be nothing to be worried about.

From my limited experience with a 66 and now a 72, this can be quite normal. Your car is 28 years old and often these carbs have minor warpage and/or seals and gaskets wear out. These can lead to some significant fuel odors. As suggested, I would pull the air cleaner assembly and look for signs of fuel puddles. These are usually dirty, black spots where the fuel has evaporated. Next, I would run the car with the cleaner off and look for fuel leakage.

After I have driven my 72 and then parked it, there is a fuel smell and, hot oil smell for the better part of the day. I consider this normal provided none of the above symptoms are present.

Also look to see if the vapor canister is still there/hooked up correctly. It is there to collect fuel vapors to keep them out of the air.

Rookie question, where is the vapour canister? I've checked out the build manual and cannot locate this item. Where about would it be on an 1980?

It's hard to find and somewhat burried. On the driver's side, in the fender, behind and under the washer fluid tank. you will probably have to remove the tank to get to the vapour can. The power break booster...if you have one...can also make getting in hard to do. Take you time, use a flash light, and check everything.

I also have a '78 and just changed the final filter at the bottom of the cannister. I also have a "gassy" smell at times, though it seems to lessen with more driving. This sucker is quite buried as noted above. The real trick I found is that there is an access panel. You have to remove the side rocker and then there are (4) bolts holding the cover plate underneath. From there you can get to it fully.

Glad you said that...I never removed mine so I didn't know about those.
