Default Thinking about a new carb

Usually this is one of those questions that gets people riled up, but here it goes anyway.

I have a goodwrench 350 crate motor, edelbrock intake and mallory dist. I have not been real happy with my 600 cfm Edelbrock Performer and was thinking about a new carb. After reading that Lars does not "support" them I think the deal is sealed.

What I would like is some good advice based on experience (not neccessarily just bias) on what would be a good replacement.

Thanks, Chris

I've been using a Holley 670cfm Street Avenger on my 355. So far it has been hassel free.

There's nothing wrong with the Edelbrock as far as design goes. Yeah, it's a 50 year old design, but so is the Holley. The Q-Jet ain't far behind.

What exactly is the problem it's giving you? Many carb problems can be cured with a good cleaning and returning the calibration back to the way it left the factory.

And, no, I have no preference for Carter/Weber/Edelbrock carbs. I prefer Q-Jets and Holleys but I see no reason to dump an otherwise functional carb.

Years ago I replaced a q-jet on a truck with the Edelbrock and also was not happy. I went back to the Rochester and have never looked back. It's the most highly refined, best street-performance carb ever made. With the fact that you can pick up a used one for next to nothing and get a kit and rebuild it (plenty of support available right here on the forum), it's the only way to go! God bless, Sensei

REPLY: The Edelbrock is a nice carb as far as working on it goes ; its a good design. However, there is ALOT more power to be had from a Holley or Demon ...especially if you opt for a double pumper . I have a 1970 BB Vette which had an 800 Edelbrock on it and i changed it out for a 800 Mighty Demon , dp, mech secs. annular boosters. LEt me tell you....ill never go without a Double Pumper Carb again. The increase in hp/tq has turned it into a scary-fast car. I would seriously look at Demon Carbs for your setup -- they are very well engineered, come with a tuning DVD, and look sweet. Good luck.

Definitely q-jet. Great thing about them is when you upgrade your engine to need a higher cfm, they're ready for ya as they can flow 750 to 850 cfm, depending on the model you get.

The Edelbrock runs fine going down the road, I have rebuilt mine and set it back to stock jetting and fuel level. It is very sensitive to temperature (I live in NC) and fuel pressure and does not seem to transition (part to full throttle) as well as some other cars I have been in.

I appreciate the feedback.

Again, I'm not defending the Edelbrock but it sounds more like you have a metering issue or a vacuum leak. Carbs that are very sensitive to temperature and humidity changes are just out of whack. I'm one who will put a carb in a soak and leave it for days to stew. I then will run a fine wire down the channels to make sure that they are clear, hit them with spray cleaner, and then air. If they are crusty or there is scale in the float bowls, I will also squirt some dilute sulfuric acid through the channels to disolve the mineral deposits.
