L82: forged crank & pistons. 2.02 intake valves. 9.1 CR. Makes power after 2500 up to 6000. Aluminum intake. Four bolt mains.
L48: cast crank/pistons. 1.94 intake valves low eights on compression. More torque at low rpm. Lower red line. Two bolt mains.
If you plan to keep the original engine and use it to build, get the L82 simply for the stronger internals. Other that that, not much diff.
OK, so the L82 has the stronger bottom end but what sort of HP/Torque output would be the limit for an L48 before the bottom end would give cause for concern?

I've seen two bolt blocks used successfully for mild racing engines. Quality hardware is the key. Should be fine for just about any street engine. A machine shop can convert a two-bolt block to a four-bolt. The outer bolts are splayed from the conversion, making it even stronger than a OEM 4-bolt block.
