Well, I did it. I stopped off at ZIP on the way home from work this afternoon and bought a passenger side, large head mirror for my '77. I bought a couple of other things, but that can be discussed in other posts.
Anyway, this is sort of a continuation of my earlier post http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=148238. Thanks for the comments there. I really like the look of the mirror, and I hope that it does help a little with the blind spot.
For those of you who are interested, I documented the task. It's a crude single page with lots of pictures (that add up to a little over a Meg, sorry), but here it is... http://users.erols.com/jerryp58/corv...ightmirror.htm.
I just wanted to comment on my new passenger side mirror after living with it for a week; for anyone who might be interested in doing this.
It took about a day to get used to seeing the moving reflections coming from that side of the car.
After I got it adjusted right, it really does help the blind spot, but I'm not sure that it provides that much more visibility than you would get by looking over your right shoulder.
It does whistle every now and then at highway speed, just like the driver's side.
The quality and fit of the mirror are excellent.
Finally, it is a different look from the normal, single chrome mirror shark, but I really like it :yesnod:
This may be a dumb question -- how good is the template? Have you compared/measured the holes in the template with the stock holes on the drivers side?
I guess before I go and do something like this I'm interested how well the two mirrors line up
BTW -- can anyone tell me how the original mirror is mounted? Does it use anchors as well? :smash:
Re: Passenger Side Mirror Update (Corellian Corvette)
corellian I did what jerry did using the template provided with the mirror. I also used the "welnuts" for my 77. It only had one mirror. I have a 76 that had both and the template must not have been used as I checked it and it didn't line up. I believe that type of mirror was a dealer installed option. The sport mirrors were factory installed. Not positive on this however. anyway I know the dealers would just eye ball the location I found the template very reassuring assuming that they new it was clearing everything underneath my left mirror did not use the welnuts it had a metal plate in the door that the mirror screwed into.

I don't think it is mounted with anchor screws, but I'm not sure since I didn't remove the driver's mirror. I did a rough measure with a measuring tape of the driver's mirror from the top of the door and from the front of the door to (roughly) the center of the driver's mirror and it seemed in line with the template. I don't know if they match up perfectly, but I don't think you'd be able to see a difference by "eye-balling" it.
Nice job Jerry! I did the same thing a couple of months ago and went through the same stomach churning symptoms that you did. :D I really like having the right hand mirror and I like the looks better too! :D
I put a passenger side mirror on my 75 convertible years ago. After awhile it began to droop. I tried to use epoxy and other glues to hold the head in place. It didn't work. I bought a new mirror from Eklers. It whistled badly!
I happened to be living in Orlando at the time. I drove over to Eklers with my allen wrench and they allowed me to try all six mirrors they had in stock for a test drive. I found one that didn't whistle.
A couple of years later I repainted the car and went to sport mirrors. They look cool but not much better for rear viewing. Too bad.
I still have the mirror that doesn't whistle along with the drivers side mirror if anyone is interested.
Nice job Jerry. I have been thinking about doing that to my 72 roadster. The passenger side mirror was a dealer installed option. I have a factory passenger mirror but no template. i was just thinking of doing some measuring then drilling. The template looks to make it very easy.
I don't know if the template would be the same for your '72 or not, but if so, I still have it and if you want it just let me know and I'll mail it to you.
Get a couple of those small convex mirrors and stick them in the lower outside corners of your mirrors. They cover your blind spots and make it easier to check before lane changes, etc.
