My 78 has the zz502/502, Speed Demon 850 carb, MSD distributor, MSD 8.8 wires, Edelbrock rpm air gap intake, stock 4 speed transmission that is dying, 295-65-15 street slicks and an aeromotive fuel pump and I am looking to put a nitrous kit into it, but am not quite sure what is involved and what kit to choose. This motor should handle nitrous, shouldn't it?
Can you guys please give suggestions and possible part #'s?
With my transmission dying and me worrying about breaking the stock rear end, when I race the 1/4 I launch at idle and shift at about 5000rpm's. I'm looking for a cheap and easy way to shave time off of my 1/4, which I currently run at 13.1 at 108 mph if I remember correctly. I know upping my rpm shift point will help a little, but thought that a nice nitrous kit would help here.
With the motor you have I'm surprised at your e.t.'s You can easily add a 100 h.p. shot with a Sniper system for cheap. Just make sure you have something to retard your timing (2 degrees per 50 h.p. of retard seems to be the accepted norm). Also, get a purge kit. The best "Do it all" system I've found is the Jacobs Nitrous Mastermind. It will auto retard, come in at 50% of power at what ever rpm you choose (so you don't spin the tires) and come in at 100% at whatever rpm you choose. It has a rev limiter, feul pressure safety shut off and a few other features, all in one unit. Nitrous is one hell of a bang for the buck, but I can tell you from experience that you must take all of the precautions unless you don't mind buying/building another motor. Sounds like you already have the fuel delivery up to snuff. With only a 100 h.p. shot and all of the safety concerns covered, you should be able to run with no problems to that motor for a long time.
I have hooked up many 100 horse cheater systems for the locals. I always only give then 100 horse and keep the other jets. I run my jetting just about square. 54 or .054 nitrous and .055 or #55 gas.
You do NOT need anything different at the 100 horse level, Same timing, same plugs, no dedicated fuel system. At the 150 horse you need to back off the timing but not at 100 horse.
I have seen a 16 second mustang go to 13.9's with just this simple 100 horse.
Nitrous does NOT hurt any motor, it is the increased rpm you are tempted to turn that does the damage. If you normally shift at 5000 and you find the motor reving so fast you can't follow the tac you will be pushing alot more rpm and that is the killer.
Nitrous is minus 60 so it actually cools the intake charge. You will find it very addicting but don't be tempted, stick to the 100 horse and be satisfied.
I always use the NOS cheater systems.
