So far.. I have found that it is the AC unit. The fan will work on heat or vent. I unhooked the wire to the compresser and it still blows the fuse. I am stumped. Electrical is not my strong suit. It is a 1980 that came with air. all is stock. 4 speed. Is there something I should be looking for. I see no bare wires. There is a dead short someplace. I was running down the highway and it just quit. I need to get this fixed. I would like to drive to Fun Fest and who knows what the weather will be and I don't want to listen to her if I have no air.
the 25 amp fuse that is for the Heat and A/c on the fuse box. It only does it when I turn on the A/C. I unhooked the compresser and it still does it. I don't know where else to look. I guess I could remove the dash and look for a ground. I was hoping to find something else to check first. It just quit going down the road so I know that I did not do something dumb when i put in the new radio. It was installed about 4 months back.
Ahh, ok so its possible you have something shorting the theing out around the fan switch in the console so check out the connections for the radio power. It should have been powered up from the original radio wireing. Next, unplug the resistor pack on top of the AC box there by the blower and see if it still blows the fuse. that will eliminate the switch wiring up towards the fan. There is still the Hi Blo relay. Here is the schematic for my 81, should give ou an idea of what it looks like You need a Shop Manual for your year, not the generic one. Ecklers has them
Sometimes the diode in the plug at the compressor goes bad and does this. Disconnect the compressor and see if it still blows the fuse--if not, ohm out the compressor clutch to ground.
