Default Idle was good..what happened?

Started the car after about two weeks and it idled at about 1800 rpm without kicking down. , something stuck? What should I check first? A little black smoke out of the right side exhaust.
1980, 350 crate, rochester carb,....does need a tune-up.........
Thanks, Joe

Excuse my ignorance, but should the idle screw be able to be pulled in and out with the car not running?
Basically I turned the car off, pushed the throttle lever and I did not turn the screw but pushed it in....started the car, the screw pushed out against the throttle lever and it idles normal now. Normal? Something I should check? What's up with that?

Sorry I am just a rookie. Not the idle screw sorry...I guess it is the solenoid...wire comes out the back of it.
